About Conspirators Kitchen

In a recent discussion between British Asian young people and executives from the various Television channels, the executives were surprised to find hostility from British Asian youth to the way they are currently portrayed. The felt that certain shows seemed aimed more at whites than the Asian community in particular in the area of Comedy. The TV executives were present as part of an event hosted by Channel 4 to help the major broadcasters understand what young people from diverse backgrounds wanted to see on TV. The heads of Channel 4, BBC, Channel 5, Granada and Sky were all present.

The youth present went on to say that while such comedy might appeal to white people, it was largely insulting to the young British born Asian and black populations who wanted TV to portray them in 'normal' ways rather than using their background or culture as a form of ridicule.

The gap between what ethnic minority populations want to see on TV and what is shown to them is inevitably increasing. As broadcasting moves from catering for first generation black and Asian populations to the second and third generation youth of tomorrow, they need to adapt absorb new ideas and try to understand their evolving target markets better. Conspirators’ Kitchen would argue, that although the above was nominally discussing TV, the same applies for theatre.
